Widespread, common
Wingspan: 35-60 mm
Colouring can be variable; f. carbonaria is mainly black, f. insularia is a genetically distinct intermediate form

Flight time: May-July.
Habitat: Woods, parks, hedges and gardens

Larvae feed on a range of deciduous trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants
